# Categories and Tags
Categories and Tags are descriptors that can be added to messages which add functionality.
# Categories
Categories can be added to messages, announcements, features/stories, and files to allow them to be intelligently sorted from other content. Categories perform two primary roles:
- Allow announcements and features to appear on an appropriate page (i.e. an announcement categorized 'Athletics' will show up in the feed on the Athletics page.)
- Allow readers to easily sort through a large list of announcements or features (i.e. on an announcement summary page, )
Categories can be added by using the 'Add Category' button at the bottom right. Only the category name is required. The category can also be configured as a sub-category of another category.
# Tags
Tags can be added to messages, announcements, features/stories, and files to allow them to be intelligently sorted from other content. Tags provide an additional way to sort these items in order to gain addtional specificity.
Tags can be added by using the 'Add Tag' button at the bottom right. Only the tag name is required.
